Intro to Guided Bone and Tissue Regeneration

Better Ways to Treat Gum Disease

Previous approaches to gum disease treatment have focused on eliminating infected tissue with trimming and surgery and reshaping uneven bone. Today, there are new approaches to repairing the damage. Our practice can assist with a range of therapies that help clean, restore, treat, and regenerate healthy tissue and bone, with amazing results.

Tissue Regeneration

In more advanced cases of periodontal disease, treatment focuses on the damaged pockets of bone in the jaw. To prevent further infections, tissue regeneration is recommended. This surgical procedure first cleans the pockets, then installs a membrane or grafts to protect and encourage regeneration of new gum tissue.

The same type of procedure can also be used to regenerate damaged bone. After the infected pockets are cleaned, a membrane is inserted between the gum tissue and bone. As gum tissue grows faster, the membrane slows its growth while allowing bone to regenerate.

The effectiveness of these procedures is very dependent upon patient follow-up and adherence to diet and oral care guidelines. Dr. Malek discusses options with each client to determine the best procedure for their situation.

FAQ On Guided Bone and Tissue Regeneration

What is bone tissue regeneration?

This remarkable process encourages new jawbone growth with grafts and the precise placement of membranes to direct the regeneration. After any damaged tissue has been removed, Dr. Malek will place the grafts and specialized membrane filters, where they will begin to form new tissue and bone.

What tissue is capable of regeneration?

Both gum and bone respond well to treatment. Dr. Malek may use membranes, bone grafts, or tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage your body’s ability to regenerate tissue. Each patient is different, and Dr. Malek will discuss the options for your procedures after an evaluation.
