Soft tissue grafting, or gum grafting, is often recommended to treat gum recession or improve the appearance of an uneven gumline. Your gums may recede due to several different factors, such as the presence of periodontal disease, overaggressive brushing, poor oral hygiene or the use of tobacco products. We strongly recommend that you seek treatment if your gums have receded, as gum recession can lead to tooth loss and other oral health problems if left untreated. Our periodontist will carefully examine your mouth to determine the extent of the problem and whether soft tissue grafting is the right option for you.
When you receive a soft tissue graft, our periodontist will take tissue from another area of your mouth and stitch it onto areas of the gums where gum tissue has receded. This tissue will then grow together with the existing tissue in the treated area to improve the health and appearance of your gums. In some cases, our periodontist may also use tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage your body’s natural healing abilities and promote faster healing and a quicker recovery.
